CANDLEWOOD — Party politics began in New Ulster today with the founding of the country’s first political party.
The New Ulster Democratic Party, which calls itself ‘centrist and sensible’, was announced by parliamentary candidates Stephen Cameron and Eloise Penner. Both Cameron and Penner sat as independent MPs in the outgoing House of Assembly.
Cameron, who will serve as the party’s inaugural leader, said, ‘The NUDP isn’t about dividing our country along political lines: it’s about bringing people together with common beliefs and a common purpose.’
The duo confirmed the party intends to contest the general election scheduled for August 30. Penner said, ‘We want to offer the citizens of New Ulster a real vision for our future.’
Despite that statement, however, the two were short on details for what their vision of the future looks like, adding that a complete party platform was being formulated and would be offered to the public ‘before the election’.
