Cameron names Cabinet

CANDLEWOOD — Premier Stephen Cameron has named his Cabinet this afternoon and, against expectations, it remains largely unchanged from his shadow cabinet while in opposition.

As well as the premiership, Cameron takes on finance, Leader of the House of Assembly, and defence.

Cameron’s Democratic Party co-founder Eloise Prenner is handed the Deputy Prime Minister and Attorney General portfolios. These arguably ‘junior’ positions free her up to lead reforms the Dems are keen on pushing through, such as changing the voting system.

There’s a big promotion for Clara Hennigan, whose defection to Cameron’s party brought them their majority in the House of Assembly. She has been given the post of Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In another surprise announcement, Speaker Autumn Hunter—another controversial convert to the DP—will remain in situ despite rumour to the contrary. Some observers thought she would be handed a government role in exchange for her stepping down from the speakership. Her decision to ‘cross the floor’ and join Cameron’s Democrats was considered damaging to the impartiality of her position and some in the House had hoped she would be tempted away from the role.

Like its predecessor, the new Cabinet will be sworn in virtually this evening by His Excellency the Governor.

Premier Cameron said he was ‘excited’ to begin the day job and ‘lead real progress’ in New Ulster.
